Tango Chirimen with its unique uneven surface is a typical Japanese silk fabric. This work is a kimono material called Kaga Yuzen, made in the Kaga region around Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Kaga yuzen is one of the three major yuzen in Japan, along with Kyoto yuzen and Edo yuzen. Remarkably, all of these yuzen are hand-painted by artisans. Kaga yuzen are originally characterized by realistic landscape designs, but this work is an exception with its bold, abstract design and use of color.
In this work, a vividly painted Kutani ware plate and a "tokkuri" (a ceramic vessel used to hold sake) are depicted, creating an exquisite abstract painting. Many Kaga Yuzen designs have been made using the Kutani ware pattern, but it is very rare for a "tokkuri" to be included in the design, as is the case in this work.
Kutaniyaki is a world famous ceramic ware, and the fact that it is used in the design of Kaga Yuzen, a traditional Japanese craft, makes it an excellent product that is a blend of two traditional Japanese techniques.
