Description

This Edo komon kimono is made using the triangular kirihame technique. kirihame refers to a technique that combines many types of patterns in one fabric. It is one of the patterns that have continued since the Edo period and is very popular among kimono lovers in Japan.
The triangular kirihame in this piece is a dyed version of the kirihame effect without actually cutting out the fabric; the four patterns are Gyougi, Same, Arare, and Kikko, each of which is a typical Edo komon pattern.
The Edo komon patterns in this work are made with kiribori, one of the techniques of Isekatagami, an important intangible cultural asset of Japan.
Kiribori is a technique in which a semi-cylindrical blade (cone) is held perpendicular to the base paper to make a round hole, and a pattern is created by a series of holes or a combination of small and large holes.
The most famous katagami is made in Shirako-cho, Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture.
