Description

The word "stripes" in this work means "parallel lines that move forever but never intersect" in Japanese. Stripes are a typical design representing coolness, known as "Iki" in Japan.
From the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the early Edo period, stripes began to appear on clothing in Japan. At first, horizontal stripes dominated and were worn only by a small group of fashion-conscious people.
By the middle of the Edo period, the use of vertical stripes became widespread. During this time, women in Edo preferred a slender silhouette, and the trend was for them to wear thick-soled sandals (koma geta), pull the obi high on the chest, and lower the hem so that it draped, making them look slender. Vertical stripes were effective in making the lines of the body look beautiful and satisfied the aesthetic sense of the time.
Stripes are also associated with the spirit of "Iki" in Edo. The philosopher Shuzo Kuki explains "Iki" in detail in his book "The Structure of Iki".
The "stripes" of this kimono consist of a pair of two thin lines and are also described as two daimyos.
This kimono was made by Gunze, a well-known large Japanese textile company.
