Kaga Yuzen is a hand-drawn kimono with a free-spirited and beautifully colored pattern. This is a beautiful dye work that is considered one of the three great yuzen styles of Japan. This work focuses on a pictorial style of realistic flower and herb patterns using traditional Japanese colors and the natural beauty of Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture.
This work realistically depicts the flowers of the four seasons in Japan and shows the serenity and softness unique to Kaga Yuzen. The flowers depicted are chrysanthemum, plum, wisteria, iris, bellflower, camellia and nanten. Kaga Yuzen uses a technique called "saki-bokashi" in which the pattern is dyed darker from the inside out, which is the opposite of Kyoto Yuzen.
In this process, the hand-drawn pattern is first dyed on a white fabric with glue to prevent it from bleeding, and then pink bokashi is applied. The next step is to steam the fabric to fix the dye. Finally, the glue is removed with water to complete the process. The last process is known as the famous "Yuzen Nagashi" process.
