Japanese Silk Kimono Artwork into rooms around the world
Hello! People of the world
My name is MAYA. I live in Japan. I was saddened by the fact that many of the centuries-old Japanese silk fabrics are not made into kimonos, but are distributed as vintage items and eventually discarded. I thought, "Why don't we cut them up and use them as works of art to be displayed in people's homes around the world instead of discarding them?"
I decided to start "Kijaku Art Mayako.S" to sell silk fabrics used for kimonos in frames to the world. My wish is that through this activity, kimono materials destined to be discarded will continue to live on the walls of people's rooms around the world.
Why I insist on kimono
materials
with certificates
of authenticity.
I have been wearing kimono by myself for about 30 years. I have a technique for wearing a kimono. And I have taught this technique to many people. I have a technique to wear a kimono, but I have a resistance to cut a wearable kimono. A kimono is a garment made by the handiwork of many people. To turn a kimono material into a kimono, the handwork of a kimono maker is necessary. If it is an vintage kimono, there is a high probability that it was handmade by the owner's mother or grandmother. It is sadder to cut a wearable kimono because it would mean losing the handwork that transformed the kimono material into a garment called a kimono.
Also, it costs a lot of money to transform kimono material into wearable clothing. Kimono also requires a separate silk fabric called "hakkake" for the lining, which is also very expensive. Therefore, making a kimono from kimono material is like haute couture commissioned by a few wealthy people.
Japan is currently experiencing a retro boom, and kimonos are very popular among young people. For economic reasons, many kimono lovers in Japan buy vintage kimonos instead of expensive haute couture kimonos. The reason for the popularity of vintage kimonos is that they are made of silk fabric and can be purchased inexpensively. I want many people to wear kimonos that are already wearable.
I wear kimonos every day. I have many years of knowledge and experience with kimonos. Therefore, I can judge whether or not someone would be willing to pay the high cost of work and lining for the kimono material to be tailored into a kimono.
My basic philosophy is that wearable vintage kimonos should be worn, and only vintage kimonos with a small chance of being made into kimonos should be used for interior decoration.
I am particularly interested in kimono materials that have a certificate of authenticity. This is because the certificate is the only way to verify the quality of the kimono.
There are many vintage kimonos that are inferior or not 100% Japanese silk. Even experts often do not know what kind of fabric a tailored vintage kimono is made of. From this perspective, I have strong resistance to creating works from tailored kimonos.
My wish is to save 100% Japanese silk from being thrown away and to use it as interior decoration in people's rooms all over the world.
